Volvo Mild Hybrid Powertrains

Volvo mild hybrid powertrains deliver the power of gas and electric technology to give you enhanced fuel efficiency and a boost in power. A mild hybrid will provide you with a similar experience as a regular gas vehicle because the electric motors run off a battery that recharges itself using regenerative braking technology and power from the gas engine. You never have to plug in a mild hybrid, and you will refuel like normal at a gas station. If you are looking to harness the power of electricity without changing your current driving habits, a mild hybrid is a great choice.

The mild hybrid powertrain comprises a 48-volt battery that powers an electric motor mated to one of three gas engines. The base B4 is the most economical choice on the Volvo XC40 crossover SUV and features a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The B5 engine will be the same 2.0-liter gas engine with different tuning to enhance certain performance parameters. You can upgrade the Volvo XC40 with the B5 engine, and it comes standard on the S60 sedan, XC60, and XC90. The B6 engine will be the most powerful offering and can produce up to 295 horsepower, depending on the configuration. The powerful engine will come standard on the Volvo V90 Cross Country and S90 sedan. You can upgrade the Volvo XC60, XC90, and S60 sedan to the B6 engine for top-of-the-line mild-hybrid performance.

Volvo Plug-In Hybrid Electric Powertrains

The T8 Recharge powertrain is Volvo's plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrain. Like a mild hybrid, a gas engine is paired with a powerful electric motor - or two to provide all-wheel drive. However, the electric motors run off a powerful battery with enough juice to provide a modest pure electric driving range of up to 41 miles before needing to plug in for a recharge. If you don't plug in to recharge the battery, the plug-in hybrid will operate like a mild hybrid vehicle. The following models come with the T8 Recharge powertrain option:

  • S60 Recharge
  • S90 Recharge
  • V60 Recharge

Volvo Pure Electric Powertrains

Volvo pure electric vehicles (EVs) are the final stage of electrification. As the powertrain selection moves toward more gas-free options, current EVs set the stage for what is possible. There are currently three Volvo EVs, with the debut of the Volvo EX90 fully electric three-row SUV, delivering the type of vehicles that most families need without gas.
