Volvo considers bringing self-driving pilot program to the U.S.

Here in Chicago, there are numerous vehicle accidents every day. What if there was a way to drastically reduce the number of car accidents while also giving handicapped or visually impaired people the ability to have their own vehicle again? It may sound like a fantasy, but Volvo is making large strides in the self-driving vehicle market.

Basically, a self-driving car has sensors that are designed to detect objects hundreds of feet away in every direction. They can sense other vehicles, cyclists and even pedestrians or animals in the roadway. The software then processes this information and helps the car navigate the road safely. Amazing, right? Taking things one step further, Volvo announced earlier this month that they will be unveiling a program in the near future that will put Chinese drivers behind the wheel of self-driving vehicles.

Volvo also has plans to debut the program in Sweden next year, and there is talk of it coming to the United States if all goes smoothly. It was reported that Volvo discussed their U.S. autonomous-driving program at the National Automobile Dealers association conference in Las Vegas. At the conference, Lex Kerssemakers, Volvo CEO, said that he'd like to initiate a program in the United States similar to what is coming in Sweden.

The Swedish program will be called Drive Me, and it is set to kick off in Gothenburg, the automaker's home city. Next year, 100 Volvo XC90 SUVs equipped with self-driving capabilities will embark on a specific 31-mile route. The pilot program is scheduled to run for two years. Hopefully, things will go smoothly and we'll be seeing the program kick off here in the U.S. in the near future.
